What a Florida CBC license lets you build

The Certified Building Contractor (CBC) covers commercial and residential buildings up to three stories anywhere in Florida, plus remodeling and improvement work on larger buildings where the job does not alter structural members. For most builders working in homes, townhomes, and low-rise commercial, the CBC is the whole game at a lower exam load than the GC.

What the exam actually looks like

Three exams: Contract Administration (50 scored questions, 4.5 hours), Project Management (50 scored questions, 4.5 hours), and Business and Finance (120 scored questions, 6.5 hours). All open book, all multiple choice, 70 percent to pass, computer-based at Pearson VUE centers with registration through Professional Testing, Inc. Only the state-approved reference books come into the room with you.

What we hand you

The full approved reference set in current approved editions, hand tabbed and highlighted. Ships within 48 hours or we credit you $100. Rental packages include both prep courses and a refundable book deposit. We handle exam registration and complete your DBPR application with you so nothing gets kicked back.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CBC and a CGC?

A Certified Building Contractor (CBC) builds commercial and residential buildings up to three stories. A Certified General Contractor (CGC) has no height or size limit. If your work lives in low-rise commercial and residential, the CBC covers it with a slightly shorter trade exam.

Is the Florida building contractor exam open book?

Yes. All three CBC exams are open book, limited to books on the state's approved reference list. Tabbed and highlighted references turn the time limit into your advantage.

How many exams does the CBC require?

Three: Contract Administration (50 scored questions, 4.5 hours), Project Management (50 scored questions, 4.5 hours), and Business and Finance (120 scored questions, 6.5 hours). Passing is 70 percent on each.

Do I need experience to qualify?

Florida requires four years of experience, or a mix of college credit and experience, with supervisory time included. Call us and we will confirm your qualifying path before you apply.

Can I rent the books?

Yes. Rentals include the full tabbed book set plus both prep courses, with a refundable deposit and a 4 month return window.
